Goodbye To You

Points and perspectives
Of lonesome
Bluer than the Sky's eyes.

This Carnival world
And the finality of it.
There will be nothing
Like that again.

There's only so much
I can do.
I can thrash
I can smash my guitar.
There will never
Be nothingness like this again.

Good lights
In the Northern sky of red
Murk of cream and shocking.
Hips lips they then waved
His cigarette.

The six months
Have been cut one third.
The car was moving
The prisoner moved.

I threw the glass of whiskey
At her.
The maid months
Have been cut one third.

I know a lot of people looking for jobs who have difficulty
with their work histories. Most companies are profit driven,
and although everybody wants to see vets get hired, the
people actually doing the hiring want to know that the people
they hire are qualified. Human Resource Managers aren't
especially known for their creative thinking, and many vets
have difficulty translating their military skill sets to meet the
requirements of civilian employers.

The trick is to get a job that bypasses HR. They aren't there to find
qualified people, they are there to disqualify people. The latter seems to
justify their existence somehow.

You're absolutely correct, Kevin. Unfortunately,
HR guards all the internet portals through which
applicants are required to submit their resumes.

Nobody gets a sit down interview without invite.
If you have a contact, or a relative, on the inside,
then you may be able to bypass HR. Otherwise,
you take your chances with the rest of the hoi palloi.

I took a different path as an independent consultant. My rule was that if
I had to talk to HR first, I simply didn't bother. It wasn't worth
wasting my time.

The second rule was that anything over three screenings/interviews it was
a non-starter.

The last rule was that if your questions get cut off at an interview[1]
or you're not talking to the principals, it's time to look elsewhere.

That would have been tougher without a track record and a huge list of
references.

[1] This also applies when they're obviously reading off a script and
can't answer otherwise.

Ambition is a driving desire to constantly "better" oneself in the eyes of his/her peers. Fame, power, a better job, bigger house, etc., are all fodder for one's ambition.

I'm happy just making enough money to support my family.

An ambitious person would devote his free time and excess energy to furthering his career/achieving his goal, etc. I'd prefer to lie in a hammock and read a good book.

Basically, I'm talking "Walden," here.

Mooching, otoh, is a form of social parasitism.

I slightly disagree but only because of my perspective: most of my motivation
and ambition is driven by an inward mechanism, an unstoppable engine
towards creation.

I'm also driven to create -- but I wouldn't call it an ambition. I guess it's a matter of semantic differences. Ambition seems more like a goal one chooses for oneself, whereas creative drive is either an instinct or obsession (or a little bit of both).

They're similar, insofar as they're both powerful and instinctual ... but the former originates in one's upper brain, whereas the latter is purely the lower brain's affair.

For someone who speaks highly of psychological principles you
seemingly have missed a very large part of it: woman.
I suggest you read up on the 'fairer' sex, especially today's aggressive type,
and come back to this particular discussion, refreshed.
A woman may both openly desire and enjoy sex. However, any biological predisposition to engage in sexual activity (ovulation) remains just that: a predisposition.

The male, otoh, produces approximately 1 billion sperm cells each month. As these cells have a short lifespan, and as there is limited storage space in his testicles, he must also ejaculate approximately 1 billion sperm cells in the same period. This biological function is accompanied by an instinctual drive that has all the urgency of severe hunger pangs, and that can only be satisfied through some form of sexual activity.

The existence of male and female sex drives, and the discrepancies between the sexes in this regard, form the basis of Aristophanes' "Lysistrata," wherein the women of Athens and Sparta withhold sexual favors from their mates as a means of forcing them to end the Pelopponesian War.

LOL. Okay, so. You're both racist and sexist.
If your lower brain hangs between your legs,
where would your wife's lower brain be?
Women don't have a lower brain, as their sex drive doesn't take over their entire being, until satisfied.
Some archaic ideas need to be tied up in a black
bag so they don't see the light of day anymore.
It's not an "idea" (archaic or otherwise), it's a biological fact.
For someone who speaks highly of psychological principles you
seemingly have missed a very large part of it: woman.

Goodbye To You
Points and perspectives
Of lonesome
Bluer than the Sky's eyes.
This Carnival world
And the finality of it.
There will be nothing
Like that again.
There's only so much
I can do.
I can thrash
I can smash my guitar.
There will never
Be nothingness like this again.
Good lights
In the Northern sky of red
Murk of cream and shocking.
Hips lips they then waved
His cigarette.
The six months
Have been cut one third.
The car was moving
The prisoner moved.
I threw the glass of whiskey
At her.
The maid months
Have been cut one third.
-Will Dockery (Written July 1981)
I would actually like to see this as a fully writ short story...
Interesting idea, Richard, not sure if I could pull it off
though...
When was the last short story you wrote?
Probably his work history the last time he filled out a job
application.
Job application? Dreckster? Assumes facts not in evidence.

Oh, a decade and a half or so at least, and then it was for use in comic strips.

I have written one novel that survives, back many years ago, which I intend still to do something with... if I can remain living long enough.

An example of short story writing that is used in visual art, the sequential storytelling, as Eisner called it (first three parts):

By the way, Richard thanks for reading my "Exile On 18th Court" comic strip I'm serial scanning on Instagram, and thanks more for the kind commentary.

I'll pass your compliments on Sulzbach's art to him when I see him again. He was spotted walking around on the outskirts of town by a mutual friend last week so I know he's back in the area.

Our friend said he was calm and sober and friendly... not "spaced out" like we all remember him from last year.

Looking forward to having a sit down with him to hear of his latest round of adventures, which he gave Lisa a capsule synopsis of...
