Against the marsh
by Dan Barfield
Willie-boy,...limited
computer access time...
Beautiful day here...
silvery-bright, the ocean
like a silver-blue mirror,
palm trees whispering to the wind.
white
birds standing like virgin brides
against the yellow-green of the
marsh....
been painting hard, doing good work--I think--
still living off
of peas and rice and fish....
crabbing "ain’t worth a
damn!"
....television don’t work anymore
(thank God..No distractions there!)
Still no phone...
doubt I'll get one.....
Joe's doing alright
since he cut off his thumb..
learning to paint without
it
Robert-called-Duncan
...still walking around with his flashlight.....
Latino girls still beautiful,
but untouchable......take
care,old friend....Dan

A new poem from Dan Barfield:

******************

https://mdbarfield.blogspot.com/2023/10/sidewalk-cafe.html

Sidewalk Cafe

Sidewalk cafe,

Sailboats floating

like-

White swans floating-

Coconut palms

Crystal water

Soft Spanish

Old fort.

Gray walls.

Rusty cannons.

Dark eyed girls

Golden skin.

Shy smiles

Laughing children.

Old men sit

Cigar smoke

and

Dominoes.

-Dan Barfield

The above is an example of Fragmentism in its simplest form: a laundry list of descriptive things the speaker sees.

Unlike the more complex examples by Stinky George and his Donkey, Barf's poem eschews stream of consciousness and vaguely connected thought associations, to jot down the various elements of the scene in shorthand.

silvery-bright, the ocean
like a silver-blue mirror,
palm trees whispering to the wind.
white
birds standing like virgin brides
against the yellow-green of the
marsh....
been painting hard, doing good work--I think--
still living off
of peas and rice and fish....
crabbing "ain’t worth a
damn!"
....television don’t work anymore
(thank God..No distractions there!)
Still no phone...
doubt I'll get one.....
Joe's doing alright
since he cut off his thumb..
learning to paint without
it
Robert-called-Duncan
...still walking around with his flashlight.....
Latino girls still beautiful,
but untouchable......take
care,old friend....Dan

Sidewalk Cafe
Sidewalk cafe,
Sailboats floating
like-
White swans floating-
Coconut palms
Crystal water
Soft Spanish
Old fort.
Gray walls.
Rusty cannons.
Dark eyed girls
Golden skin.
Shy smiles
Laughing children.
Old men sit
Cigar smoke
and
Dominoes.

The fluctuating numbers of periods comprising the ellipses makes me strongly suspect the latter.

Again, Donkey:

The question was not one of who wrote the poem, Donkey; but who *posted* the poem here.

Since Barfield's ellipses were as bad as rhonda-jane porlock's and Stinky George's, we wondered whether Dan, or the person who posted his poem, was responsible.

Against the marsh
by Dan Barfield
Willie-boy,...limited
computer access time...
Beautiful day here...
silvery-bright, the ocean
like a silver-blue mirror,
palm trees whispering to the wind.
white
birds standing like virgin brides
against the yellow-green of the
marsh....
been painting hard, doing good work--I think--
still living off
of peas and rice and fish....
crabbing "ain’t worth a
damn!"
....television don’t work anymore
(thank God..No distractions there!)
Still no phone...
doubt I'll get one.....
Joe's doing alright
since he cut off his thumb..
learning to paint without
it
Robert-called-Duncan
...still walking around with his flashlight.....
Latino girls still beautiful,
but untouchable......take
care,old friend....Dan

One would think so.
Again
The question was not one of who wrote the poem, Donkey; but who *posted* the poem here.
Since Barfield's ellipses were as bad as rhonda-jane porlock's and Senetto, we wondered whether Dan, or the person who posted his poem, was responsible.

No, what I needed to know was whether the poem was *posted* by Dan Barfly, or by someone else who may have edited it.

However, you have already explained that the wonky ellipses and incomplete sentences were posted exactly as Barfly had written them.

As I'd suspected, Dan's (negative) influence on your writing style can now be directly traced.

Was this posted by Dan Barf, Dan Barfield, or rhonda-jane porlock?
We laughed at the "Dan Barf" name too. However, who is "Andrew Roller," who seems to have originally posted the poem somewhere? Is Andrew Roller a pen name for Barfield? We don't see Barfield posting the poem himself--it is always in the framework of this Andrew Roller post, and Will Dockery reposts it. We have a strong suspicion that Will Dockery is/was being paid to be Dan Barfield's publicist.

We also think that the "poem" started out as an email or letter to Will Dockery, and someone ("Andrew Roller?" Will Dockery?) chopped it into individual lines:

"Willie-boy,...limited computer access time... Beautiful day here... silvery-bright, the ocean like a silver-blue mirror, palm trees whispering to the wind. white birds standing like virgin brides against the yellow-green of the marsh.... been painting hard, doing good work--I think-- still living off of peas and rice and fish.... crabbing 'ain’t worth a damn!' ....television don’t work anymore (thank God..No distractions there!) Still no phone... doubt I'll get one..... Joe's doing alright since he cut off his thumb.. learning to paint without it [.] Robert-called-Duncan ...still walking around with his flashlight..... Latino girls still beautiful, but untouchable......take care, old friend....Dan"

That is no poem--it's a hurried letter/email to a "friend." What poem ends with a "take care, old friend" and the name of the author?" We noticed that Mr. Barfield mentioned "girls" instead of "women." "Silver" and "silvery" are used within 5 words of each other. "..., ...., ....." take the place of having something substantial to say. Who is "Joe" of the missing thumb? Is this Joey Stout? We know not of "Robert-called-Duncan." Is this a Shakespeare reference? What is the meaning of the flashlight and the walking around with said object?
Post by Michael Pendragon
The fluctuating numbers of periods comprising the ellipses makes me strongly suspect the latter.
Sometimes there are no periods. This work is from an English teacher?

To NancyGene, Andrew Roller was a well known small press publisher in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly of Comic Update, a small press news and review zine, but also as a publisher of poetry and comics chapbooks from many of the creators of that era, including Dan Barfield.

Against the marsh
by Dan Barfield
Willie-boy,...limited
computer access time...
Beautiful day here...
silvery-bright, the ocean
like a silver-blue mirror,
palm trees whispering to the wind.
white
birds standing like virgin brides
against the yellow-green of the
marsh....
been painting hard, doing good work--I think--
still living off
of peas and rice and fish....
crabbing "ain’t worth a
damn!"
....television don’t work anymore
(thank God..No distractions there!)
Still no phone...
doubt I'll get one.....
Joe's doing alright
since he cut off his thumb..
learning to paint without
it
Robert-called-Duncan
...still walking around with his flashlight.....
Latino girls still beautiful,
but untouchable......take
care,old friend....Dan

There it is, a Dan Barfield poem posted to Usenet, almost 24 years ago to the day, Aug 27, 1999, 3:00:00 AM...

To NancyGene, Andrew Roller was a well known small press publisher in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly of Comic Update, a small press news and review zine, but also as a publisher of poetry and comics chapbooks from many of the creators of that era, including Dan Barfield.
HTH and HAND.
So is this work, as NancyGene surmises, a letter/email message to you that has been chopped up to resemble a poem?
No, it was posted exactly as written, including the many "...s" as written by Dan Barfield.
HTH and HAND.
It has not showed up yet on Narkive, where the original thread will hopefully be visible:

The question was not one of who wrote the poem, Donkey; but who *posted* the poem here.

Since Barfield's ellipses were as bad as rhonda-jane porlock's and Stinky George's, we wondered whether Dan, or the person who posted his poem, was responsible.

Good question, Andrew Roller made the actual posting, and was publisher of the poetry chapbook the poem came from.

Not entirely.

The elliptic culprit was either Dan Barf(fly) or Andrew Roller.

The question remains as to whether Roller copied Barf's ellipses as set by the author, or whether he sloppily added on the extras.

Unless Will wants to scan/post a photo of the chapbook page to his Pinterest account, the mystery will not be resolved.

There it is, a Dan Barfield poem posted to Usenet, almost 24 years ago to the day, Aug 27, 1999, 3:00:00 AM...
https://groups.google.com/g/rec.arts.poems/c/vqug7OFOL60/m/8wLCIeJPh8oJ
Was this posted by Dan Barf, Dan Barfield,
Yes, Barfield wrote the poem.
That would seem obvious... ha ha.
One would think so.
Again
The question was not one of who wrote the poem, Donkey; but who *posted* the poem here.
Since Barfield's ellipses were as bad as rhonda-jane porlock's and Stinky George's, we wondered whether Dan, or the person who posted his poem, was responsible.
As I already answered, Andrew Roller posted the poem to Usenet, about 20 years ago.
Then why do you and your sock keep insisting that the poem's authorship "would seem obvious" when its authorship had never been in question?
The poem was written by Dan Barfield, that's all you need to know, really..
No, what I needed to know was whether the poem was *posted* by Dan

We would bet that the Duckies soaked Barfly for taking the pictures. They have to make up for the losses on selling Dirtnap's last flight candids.

Barfly must have
Fuck off, troll... ha ha.
With Michael Pendragon's fixation that's unlikely.
Pathetic but true....!!
Welcome to Ripley's "Pathetic but True....!!"
George Sulzbach attempted to recaptured his drug, alcohol, and Bharma Dum destroyed youth by putting shoe polish in his beard.

Pathetic but True..
Shoe polish ate his brain, or what was left of it.

Why should anyone, other than Barf, Sulzbach and Dockery, care about Dan Barf? He is not on AAPC, has no talent in art or writing, and seems to just be another bum. If he wants to join AAPC, he is welcome. Other than that, his name has no place here.

Against the marsh
by Dan Barfield
Willie-boy,...limited
computer access time...
Beautiful day here...
silvery-bright, the ocean
like a silver-blue mirror,
palm trees whispering to the wind.
white
birds standing like virgin brides
against the yellow-green of the
marsh....
been painting hard, doing good work--I think--
still living off
of peas and rice and fish....
crabbing "ain’t worth a
damn!"
....television don’t work anymore
(thank God..No distractions there!)
Still no phone...
doubt I'll get one.....
Joe's doing alright
since he cut off his thumb..
learning to paint without
it
Robert-called-Duncan
...still walking around with his flashlight.....
Latino girls still beautiful,
but untouchable......take
care,old friend....Dan
