Euridice's Warning
-------------------

What if I descend into a hell so dark
that you can't come down after me,
trailing doctors with their pills.

Even if you beg permission, sweetly
to the sound of strings pulled lightly,
tug the heavy heart of Hades,
you'll still break the rules and look.

But they all will point at you and blame you
for my crimes against myself
while you hold the empty shell
of my manufactured hell.

Slightly eerie, good read.... plays well with the frame of mind after reading the article Antti linked to in the other thread:

Two things (at least) to learn from Karen's poem: 1) never look back, 2) it's always his fault.

Loved this one... here's an OB, my take on the Orpheus and Eurydice story, applied to my personal mythology:

"Ozone Stigmata" (Will Dockery & Henry Conley) performed by Jack Snipe (all instruments and vocals, except drum machine by Zoom MRS-82). From the upcoming album "Exile in Shadowville".

What exactly did you love about it?
How do the lyrics of Ozone Stigmata relate to Orpheus and Eurydice? Perhaps you can explain the symbolism you used in the poem/lyrics, as we don't see that. You didn't mention the reference when you were first talking about Karen's poem on June 19, 2007:

It's not there and not even close to being anything about Orpheus and Eurydice. In fact, you never heard of that myth until Karen posted her poem in 2007. Just because you put Hell into a poem, it doesn't make it your Dante's Inferno.

A question,Nancy...
Do you use "we" because there are two of you posting: Nancy /and/ Gene?
We are "NancyGene and Jayme, Stephan Pickering's former partners in the Universe". Check our email address.
NancyGene and Jayme were just two of the ladies Pickering took up with after he divorced his third wife, who was suffering from cancer. She couldn't support him anymore so she had to go. NancyGene and Faline were such good friends that NancyGene had to file a restraining order against Faline Pickering.
You're a liar, as always. You weren't there, you don't know what happened, or the complex dynamics between Faline and NG. You have no access to the court filings, or the withdrawn filings. Faline didn't support me from 30 January 1984 when we were married, to 24 August 2008 when she perished in my arms, in the presence of her brother and my 'step'-son. You are just babbling from ignorance. You know this. So do I. Do you know why the 'restraining order' was filed against both Faline and I? Of course not. For you to say I divorced Faline, in effect discarding her (when I took care of her until 1:10 a.m. 24 August 2008). You are deliberate, knowing liar. Blow it out your ass, and whoever is writing your 'poetry'. In the almost 10 years you've been stalking me (and Neil Robbins, who IS a scientist, who is willing to, once again, state what he thinks of you), you have never published 'poetry'. But, you have relished in smearing others. You do not intimate me, nor does your goyfriend.

So?
That’s what she chose to be called. NG.
Get over it.
Don’t you have some fakes to be victimized by? If not, I’m sure you’ll find something or someone here to give you an excuse to whine and cry about.

Euridice's Warning
-------------------
What if I descend into a hell so dark
that you can't come down after me,
trailing doctors with their pills.
Even if you beg permission, sweetly
to the sound of strings pulled lightly,
tug the heavy heart of Hades,
you'll still break the rules and look.
But they all will point at you and blame you
for my crimes against myself
while you hold the empty shell
of my manufactured hell.
Loved this one...
What exactly did you love about it?
How do the lyrics of Ozone Stigmata relate to Orpheus and Eurydice? Perhaps you can explain the symbolism you used in the poem/lyrics, as we don't see that.
Well, you always did seem a bit slow... it is in there, keep looking.
It's not there and not even close to being anything about Orpheus and Eurydice. In fact, you never heard of that myth until Karen posted her poem in 2007. Just because you put Hell into a poem, it doesn't make it your Dante's Inferno.

I actually did refer to "Ozone Stigmata" there, as well, I see now:

Another nice bit, working with the Orpheus myth, with a nice touch of
modern times:

http://www.mindspring.com/~kat2/poem/euridice.html

"What if I descend into a hell so dark
that you can't come down after me,
trailing doctors with their pills."

"...while you hold the empty shell of my manufactured hell..."

Reminds me of my "I should have sued the doctor" et cetera from "Ozone
Stigmata".

No, Will. Your poem has nothing to do with the Orpheus/Eurydice myth. First off, your narrator is going to Hell, not Hades or the Underworld. Hell is a Judeo-Christian concept. Stigmata is also associated with Christianity -- especially Catholicism. The phrase "Going to hell in a hand basket (or handcart) simply means that one is on a fast road to ruin. Christmas is also, obviously, a Christian holiday.

The only reference to Greek mythology in your entire piece is the possible allusion to Charon... but he was also appropriated into Catholicism by Dante.

In the Orpheus/Eurydice myth, Orpheus descends into the Underworld to bring Eurydice (his wife) back from the land of the dead. He is granted the right to take her back, but is forbidden to look at her until they have returned to the world of the living. Orpheus looks at her too soon, and she is lost to him forever.

If this myth is being reenacted in your poem, it isn't coming across. AFAICS, your narrated is remembering his deceased wife, wondering if he could have made some extra money suing her doctor, and letting his life go to hell in a hand basket (probably through excessive drinking and drugging, although that isn't specified).

This doesn't correspond to the Orpheus/Eurydice myth.

Nor is there any mention of the ozone or of stigmata.

A poem's title should refer to, help explain, or comment on the poem. "Ozone Stigmata" would be a good title for a poem on pollution/global warming. In this poem, it only adds to the confusion brought about by your randomly strung together sentence fragments.

Then it not only doesn't correspond to the Greek myth, but it gets the "hell in a handcart" expression ass-backward to boot.

As I wrote earlier in this tread:

-----------------------------------------------------

Here's an OB, my take on the Orpheus and Eurydice story, applied to my personal mythology:

"Ozone Stigmata" (Will Dockery & Henry Conley) performed by Jack Snipe (all instruments and vocals, except drum machine by Zoom MRS-82). From the upcoming album "Exile in Shadowville".

Unfortunately, your claiming that it was based on the Greek myth doesn't mean that it actually was.

Explain how the narrative of your poem corresponds to that of the Orpheus-Eurydice myth.

Good. We're making progress. In what way did the Orpheus-Eurydice archetypes inspire it?

Listen to the song, read the lyrics. It should be obvious:

That's just the problem. I have.

So have ME, NancyGene and Dental River.

None of us see the connection. And I'm pretty sure that we're all familiar with the Greek myth.

Orpheus descended into the Underworld to bring his wife back to the world of the living. Does the protagonist in your narrative attempt to rescue his wife from the Underworld? And, if so, why has her soul been consigned to Hell?

Okay, you don't see it, no reason to try to /make/ you see it, so we might as well not bother to discuss it any longer.

I suppose I was too subtle for you... thanks for listening and commenting, though.

There is a very good reason to discuss it, Will. You and Stink (intentionally or not) have gotten into an argument over it with several members of the group.

Those of us with whom you've been arguing are thoroughly convinced that you are wrong. And when someone has had several people explain to him *why* he is mistaken, yet obstinately maintains that he was correct -- and arrogantly claims that he was too subtle for the rest of us to understand -- well, we tend to think that he is an ignorant douchebag who's incapable both of learning and of admitting that he'd made a mistake.

I would sincerely like for you, ME, NG, DR and others to, if not get along, at least stop trolling and fighting one another. And a situation like this is the perfect place for us to take another step in that direction.

There are three possible outcomes here:

1) We will get you to understand that your poem is not a reworking of the Orpheus-Eurydice myth. You will then admit that you were wrong, thereby gaining a little respect in our eyes; and you will have learned something about poetry in the process. Win-Win.

2) You will get us to understand that your poetry was too subtle for us to understand, and that it really is a reworking of the Orpheus-Eurydice myth. We will then admit that we were wrong, and hopefully gain some iota of respect and/or understanding in our eyes; and we will have learned something about poetry in the process. Win-Win.

3) You will stubbornly insist that you are correct, ignore our explanations, and prove yourself to be a sub-moronic, illiterate, childish jackass, thereby confirming (and strengthening) our already low opinion of you; and you will have learned absolutely nothing in the process. Stalemate. And the stalemate option means that you will continue to insist that you're correct in future arguments, and AAPC will continue to be a battleground. So let's change that to Lose-Lose.

I don't like Lose-Lose situations, and I'm hoping that you're intelligent enough to share in my feelings regarding them.

So let's try for solutions 1) and/or 2).

I'm asking you to show me how your poem subtly depicts/reworks/corresponds to the Orpheus-Eurydice myth.

I'd also like to know what the ozone and stigmata have to do with it, and how it corresponds to the popular saying about going to hell in a handcart. But (baby steps) let's take this one step at a time, and figure out whether or not it is related to the Orpheus myth, and if so, how closely related.

You have the floor:

Case in point. Your stubborn refusal to admit that "Apple Montage" contains neither apples nor a montage (literary or cinematic variety) only lowers you in our estimation.

In that one, we ended up with a Stalemate (or, Lose-Lose outcome). Let's hope this one ends more amenably.

It's not the truth, Will. There is neither an apple nor a montage in your "Apple Montage" poem.

Your version of a montage has no more meaning than it you were to say that it were your version of a double-decker sundae. And calling it a double-decker sundae isn't going to make it taste any better if you try to eat it.

No, Will, there are no apples per se. There are apple trees and there is apple cider. No actual apples are mentioned.

Not only are these alleged apples not described in montage style, but they are not described at all.

Go on, show me one description of an apple in your poem.

1) Apple Montage

(Visual: One big green or red apple)

2) To the right
behind the barn
were apple trees.

(Visual: Hundreds or thousands of apples in these trees)

3) There were several
of those trees

(Visual: Close up, more apples, red or green, perhaps both)

4) and other trees
behind them
beyond a field

(Visual: Should it be specified that these are apple trees, as in an orchard?)

5) and behind them, other trees.

(Visual: Hundreds, thousands of apples)

6) watched Pops and my Uncle
cooking apple butter

(Visual: Deconstructed apples, peals and cores, and the apple sauce)

7) a wine bottle

(Visual: Apple wine?)

8) The air smelled of apple fumes

(Visual: Smell of apples brings mental picture, or should)

From the poem "Apple Montage":

1) Apple Montage
(Visual: One big green or red apple)
Apple Montage is just the title.

A montage does not suggest "one big apple." It suggests several apples.

However, since this is the *title* the reader expects there to be an apple in the actual *text* of the poem.

I'm still waiting for you to point a single apple out in the poem's text.
Post by Will Dockery
2) To the right
behind the barn
were apple trees.
(Visual: Hundreds or thousands of apples in these trees)
The "Visual" is in your head, Will. I'm not asking about what goes on in your head. I'm asking for an example *in the poem.*

You've merely said that there are apple trees. Apple trees do not bear ripe fruit all year.

Your poem is set *after* the harvest because your father and uncle are brewing apple butter. Since the apples have been harvested, they are no longer on the apple trees.

The "Visual" that I get from this passage is one of apple trees with leaves of red, brown and gold -- and nary an apple in sight.
Post by Will Dockery
3) There were several
of those trees
(Visual: Close up, more apples, red or green, perhaps both)
This passage doesn't even specify that they are apple trees.
Post by Will Dockery
4) and other trees
behind them
beyond a field
(Visual: Should it be specified that these are apple trees, as in an orchard?)
Nor does this.

The only "visual" I get is one of trees. Lots and lots of trees.

And even if they were apple trees, there is no reason to believe that they are covered with ripe fruit.

And even if this passage takes place a month before the apple butter scene, the subject in this not-quite-a-sentence is the trees -- not the unmentioned apples.
Post by Will Dockery
5) and behind them, other trees.
(Visual: Hundreds, thousands of apples)
Perhaps you should call you poem "Tree Montage." It's certainly got more than its share of trees.
Post by Will Dockery
6) watched Pops and my Uncle
cooking apple butter
(Visual: Deconstructed apples, peals and cores, and the apple sauce)
Visual: two middle aged men stirring a kettle of applesauce.
Post by Will Dockery
7) a wine bottle
(Visual: Apple wine?)
Visual: Ripple.
Post by Will Dockery
8) The air smelled of apple fumes
(Visual: Smell of apples brings mental picture, or should)
Fumes from the cooking apple butter.

So far the only mention of "apples" is in the title.

Your (for lack of a better word) argument, is predicated upon the "visuals" that arise inside your head when you read your poem. It is not based upon the actual *words* that appear within your poem's text. IOW: You are imagining things that you *wanted* the poem to express, but which you've neglected to actually put into your poem.

The "montage" appears to be a figment of your imagination as well: you see 8 apple-inspired "visuals," ergo 8 visuals make a "montage."

The poem, however, remains two scenes and a transition set in an apple orchard.

Unfortunately, your claiming that it was based on the Greek myth doesn't mean that it actually was.
Explain how the narrative of your poem corresponds to that of the Orpheus-Eurydice myth.
Well, true, my poem relates more to my personal mythology than the Orpheus-Eurydice archetypes tat inspired it.
Good. We're making progress. In what way did the Orpheus-Eurydice archetypes inspire it?
Evem I know the answer to that, Pendragon..... think about it.......

Really? Point out where Will's poem designates a female soul in Hell. Then point out where in Greek mythology Orpheus rides a shopping cart out of the Underworld.

You are aware that the Underworld/Hades and Hell/Tartarus are two different places, aren't you?

That doesn't happen in my song, either:

A handbasket is not a shopping cart.

Definition of handbasket
: a small portable basket

I'm working on the assumption that you've employed some poetic license in your use of this phrase. After all, you certainly wouldn't fit in a handbasket.

My boy ain't employin' nothin'. Hell, he can't be employed at nothin', so how in fuck he do dat den? He hear about de handbaskets, an' hows folk goes to Hell in dem, den he get mix up in his head an' think de handbaskets come out of de Hell like bran' new automobiles. He think he remember a phrase or somethin' he see, that'll look real smart in a poem. But he always get it wrong 'cause he don' understand it.

One can hold the handle while pushing a handcart or while riding in one.

One can *carry* a hand basket by its handle, or (if one is small enough to fit) one can hold onto the handle while being carried in one.

No, you didn't listen very closely. The words are "Hand basket /from/ Hell".
It is a reference to Orpheus and Eurydice, though.
Look it up.
AAPC Family Feud: Please show us "handbasket from Hell!"

So, you don;t understand what "here's an OB, my take on the Orpheus and Eurydice story, applied to my personal mythology" means.
No surprise there, N.G..
No, Will. Your poem has nothing to do with the Orpheus/Eurydice myth. First off, your narrator is going to Hell
No you too have it wrong....
He is coming FROM Hell....
Then it not only doesn't correspond to the Greek myth, but it gets the "hell in a handcart" expression ass-backward to boot.
Again, you must have not been paying attention when you read Doc's poem....

When a handbasket returns from Hell, are you supposed to return it?
Practically speaking, that handbasket is burnt to shit and not good for many more uses.

Or do handbaskets clatter out of the gates of Hell like the gondolas in a carnival ride, let the thrilled passengers out, and bring new ones in.

Ever hear of the "Willful Suspension of Disbelief"?

*************************

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspension_of_disbelief

Suspension of disbelief, sometimes called willing suspension of disbelief, is an intentional avoidance of critical thinking or logic in examining something surreal, such as a work of speculative fiction, in order to believe it for the sake of enjoyment.[1] Aristotle first explored the idea of such a concept as it relates to the principles of theater; the audience ignores the unreality of fiction in order to experience catharsis

You’re lucky anyone acknowledges you at all.

When a handbasket returns from Hell
It was a dream sequence, not real life.

You seem quite confused again, my smarmy little friend….
Karen, can you explain why such abusive posts by zod are excused by you and others here?
My post had nothing to do with zod. But yet again, he’s attacked ME with nasty, vile contempt.
But you’d have us just ignore his contemptuous and vile behavior.
We have been reporting Geo XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Perhaps because she knows how disgustingly you, Nancy G. and Pendragon have treated me for years, now...…

Just saying.....

No, you didn't listen very closely. The words are "Hand basket /from/ Hell".
It is a reference to Orpheus and Eurydice
No, Will. Your poem has nothing to do with the Orpheus/Eurydice myth
Getting back to this, you were wrong from the start, Pendragon.

My poem may not have /everything/ to do with the Orpheus/Eurydice myth but it does have /some things/ to do with .the Orpheus/Eurydice myth.

Euridice's Warning
-------------------
What if I descend into a hell so dark
that you can't come down after me,
trailing doctors with their pills.
Even if you beg permission, sweetly
to the sound of strings pulled lightly,
tug the heavy heart of Hades,
you'll still break the rules and look.
But they all will point at you and blame you
for my crimes against myself
while you hold the empty shell
of my manufactured hell.
Loved this one... here's an OB, my take on the Orpheus and Eurydice story, applied to my personal mythology:

https://soundcloud.com/jacksnipe05/ozone-stigmata-second-draft

"Ozone Stigmata" (Will Dockery & Henry Conley) performed by Jack Snipe (all instruments and vocals, except drum machine by Zoom MRS-82). From the upcoming album "Exile in Shadowville".

"My take on the Orpheus and Eurydice story, applied to my personal mythology..."

Just repost the line/lines in the poem that specifically mention apples.
Okay, I will have a look.

That sorta puts them in the ‘Damned if I do, Damned if I don’t’ situation.
(A poetic justice)
I enjoyed it, Karen.

where in Greek mythology Orpheus rides a shopping cart out of the Underworld
https://soundcloud.com/jacksnipe05/ozone-stigmata-second-draft
A handbasket is not a shopping cart.
Definition of handbasket
: a small portable basket
I'm working on the assumption that you've employed some poetic license in your use of this phrase. After all, you certainly wouldn't fit in a handbasket.
Read the lyrics, Pendragon.....
Doc says he "holds the handle" of the handbasket...
One can hold the handle while pushing a handcart or while riding in one.
One can *carry* a hand basket by its handle, or (if one is small enough to fit) one can hold onto the handle while being carried in one.
I'm quite certain a handbasket is /not/ the same as a handcart, though.

True, although this concept isn't that complicated.
